HOn3 D&RGW 9600 Series Pipe Gondola
The 9600 Series pipe gondolas were created by the D&RGW in 2 batches in 1953 by converting standard gauge 66000 series 40' Fowler box cars.
These cars were needed as the amount of pipe needing to be shipped from Alamosa to Farmington exceeded the capacity of trains using the 1500 series pipe gons and 6700 series idler flats, as the idlers were not being used to haul anything and were taking up space on the trains.
The use of the 9600's essentially doubled the capacity of each train and continued to see service until the end of the oil boom.
Several of these cars were converted in 1963 to open air observation passenger cars for the Silverton line and are still in use today on the Durango & Silverton Railroad.
Two of the 9600's have been restored (9613 and 9615) and are in use today at the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad in Chama, New Mexico.
This decal sets will letter one car.
